The Cycle

Understand the cycle of abuse:

An abuser may be edgy and easily agitated. The victim cannot do anything right and is “walking on eggshells” to try and keep the peace.

Tension builds until there is an explosion which may be verbal or physical against the victim.

After harm has been inflicted, the abuser apologizes, promises to change, sends flowers or gifts and exhibits charming but manipulative behavior. Promises it will never happen again; also referred to as the “honeymoon stage”.

A victim has feelings for their abuser and wants to believe the abuser will change.

This becomes a recurring pattern of abuse which increases in intensity and danger over time. Can lead to severe harm or even death to the partner.
